Roam

Trying to find

That space to rest

Undress

De-es

-calate

The weary wandering heart

And anxious soul

Alone

Unknown

feel

As other sung narratives

Passing by

She sniffs

Smells

Walks

Paws (Im)patient

Explores

The unseen scents

Scenes undreamt

We walked here yesterday

She doesn’t care

The sights and scents are brand new

Each day

For her

Someone else has walked by

Left their mark

Their personal art

Upon some tree

Or hidden spot of grass

She, bidden

To come and find

The treasure map of another’s time

Spent here

I follow her

A leash behind

I can’t stray

We’re headed no where

But we find it all,

She pauses and searches

As I witness her unseen discovery

The point is walking

Exploring

Sniffing

Discovering

Uncovering

new glory

residing in well-told story

new adventure

hidden

in predictable ventures

the fascinating, hidden in the familiar

the mesmerizing, hidden in the mundane

she moves along

she stops to inspect

sniff

take in

a whiff

of this glorious

laborious

tremendous

incredulous

goofy

gut-wrenching

beautiful

walk

through life.

along the road

we encounter

the sacred we seek

the journey rises to meet

us

in our walking

in our waking

we arrive

and are arrived to

met

by unforeseen

yet unsniffed

discoveries

of the divine

through the nose

of this dog

we seek a dwelling place

for where do our souls

faint and yearn

twist and churn

for some space

of being

deeply known

understood

and blessed

we seek our strength

and walk our path

hopeful for what we

believe

lies ahead

but within

therein

lies abundance and blessing

for the sacred and spiritual

the presence of God

comes in sun and in wind

in broken bread and new-made kin

meeting us again

and again

and again

upon this road we walk

within our incomplete talk

of plans and of stories

reflect on our journeys

understand our desires

make peace with our tired

unraveling

days

infinite ways

the holy comes meet us

and bid us

our blessing

along this

twisting

listening

sniffing

road

it will rise to meet you

it will serve and greet you

and the home deeply sought

will always and forever

arrive from within
